People often talk of being motivated or commited to achieving a goal or outcome as though they are the same thing BUT here’s the thing – they aren’t - you don’t have to be motivated all the time in order to achieve – you do need to be committed to the actions you’ve set out.

This is easier to see when we think about our fitness goals rather than our business ones. We aren’t always motivated to go to the gym, out for a run etc, but if you’ve commited to a goal then you are more likely to get up and go. It is the same in business.

Motivation and commitment are two crucial elements that drive us towards achieving our goals in our business. While motivation serves as the initial spark that ignites action, commitment acts as the driving force that sustains progress over the long term.

 

Motivation: The Initial Spark

Motivation often stems from external factors such as rewards, recognition, or short-term gains. It provides us with the impetus to take action and start pursuing our goals. External incentives can create a surge of motivation, encouraging us to embark on our business plans with enthusiasm and energy.

 

Commitment: The Deeper Sense of Purpose

Unlike motivation, commitment originates from our deeper sense of purpose and personal values. It represents an ongoing dedication for us to follow through on our actions and achieve our long-term goals. Commitment is driven by internal factors, such as our intrinsic motivation and alignment with personal values, creating a more enduring and resilient force.

 

Stability and Resilience

Motivation will fluctuate over time, influenced by various circumstances and external factors. If we were 100% motivated all the time we would burn out – it’s very tiring emotionally and physically! Commitment is more stable and resilient, enabling us to persevere through challenges and setbacks. While motivation may dwindle during difficult times, commitment acts as an anchor, ensuring we remain steadfast in our pursuit of business success.

 

The Power of Commitment

While motivation alone can provide short-term bursts of productivity, commitment is what ensures consistency and accountability in executing tasks and responsibilities. Commitment emphasises long-term success and enduring efforts, allowing us to stay focused on our goals even when the initial motivation fades. It creates a culture of dedication within our business, inspiring others along with us (more on this in The Ripple Effect below).

 

Immediate Results vs. Long-Term Success

Motivation often focuses on immediate results, we want instant gratification or rewards. In contrast, commitment places greater importance on long-term success and enduring efforts. Commitment encourages us to look beyond instant gains, recognising the value of consistent dedication and the cumulative impact it can have on business success.

 

The Ripple Effect

Motivation can be contagious, inspiring others to take action and join the pursuit of business goals. However, commitment goes beyond mere inspiration. It sets an example and creates a culture of dedication within a business, encouraging us to stay committed to our tasks and responsibilities, ultimately creating a collective commitment towards achieving shared objectives.

 

Internal Drive vs. External Influence

Motivation often arises from external sources such as incentives or external pressure. On the other hand, commitment arises from our own internal drive and determination. While motivation may be influenced by temporary factors, commitment remains unwavering, driven by an individual's strong internal desire to succeed.

 

Short-Term Bursts vs. Continuous Improvement

Motivation may lead to short-term bursts of productivity, driving us to accomplish tasks in the moment. However, our commitment creates continuous improvement and growth over the long term. It promotes a mindset of ongoing development, pushing us to strive for excellence and refine our skills consistently.

 

Overcoming Challenges and Distractions

Temporary obstacles or distractions can easily derail motivation, causing us to lose focus on our goals. In contrast, commitment helps us stay focused and determined amidst the challenges. It provides us the resilience to overcome setbacks and remain dedicated to our long-term vision, relying on discipline and perseverance.
